History of the Foundation

B C Shivanna Foundation is a non-profit charitable trust established in 2019 with a vision to serve the needy and vulnerable sections of society. Built on the principles of compassion, dignity, and social responsibility, the foundation was created to address the challenges faced by underserved communities and provide meaningful support where it is needed most.

Establishment in 2019

B C Shivanna Foundation began its journey with a focus on health promotion, senior care, and education. Over the years, our efforts have expanded to include public health initiatives, medical assistance, and environmental sustainability, enabling us to create a broader and more lasting impact.

Dr Thriveni B S

Founding President and Director

Thriveni is the founding president and Director of BCSF. A medical doctor, she graduated from Mysore Medical College and earned her postgraduate degree in Public Health from the United Kingdom. She has also completed fellowships in Diabetes Management from Christian Medical College, Vellore, in Public Health Leadership from Emory University, USA, and in Aged Care Services from Flinders University, Australia.

With over 25 years of experience in public health, healthcare management, and health systems strengthening, Dr. Thriveni has worked extensively with non-profit organizations to improve access to affordable, quality healthcare for underserved and marginalized communities. She serves as the Director of Kelachandra Foundation, a non-profit organization providing dialysis, outpatient care, day care, and outreach services, and also manages two skill development centres focused on empowering women and youth. In addition, she is the founding CEO of Feel at Home Elderly Care Center, where assisted living facility is provided for the senior residents with care and compassion and she is the Project Director of the Partnership for Healthy Cities Initiative, a Bloomberg Philanthropies supported project in collaboration with Vital Strategies and the World Health Organization.

Recognized for her contributions to public health and community service, she is also a recipient of the prestigious Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Award and a Member of taskforce to strengthen NCD policies, Govt of Karnataka and Former Member, Governing Council, Bidar Institute of Medical College, Karnataka

Mr Nagaraja S Beerenahally – Secretary

Nagaraja serves as the Secretary of BCSF. A law graduate with over 25 years of professional experience, he is a Senior Advocate and has served as the President of the District Bar Association, Chitradurga. He brings extensive legal expertise, leadership, and a strong commitment to social service, supporting the Foundation in its mission of advancing community welfare and public good.

Mrs Hemalatha B S – Treasurer

Treasurer

Hemalatha serves as the Treasurer of BCSF. She holds a postgraduate degree in Political Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fashion Designing. Passionate about arts, crafts, embroidery, and jewellery making, she has been voluntarily empowering marginalized communities for over a decade by promoting skill development, creativity, and self-sustainability through livelihood-oriented initiatives.

Mr Akanksh P – Trustee

Trustee

Akanksh serves as a Trustee of BCSF. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Information Science and Technology, NMAMIT, Nitte, and an MBA in Business Analytics and Marketing from R V Institute of Management, Bengaluru. He has professional experience with leading organizations including Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company, Sony India, and Vyapar, where he has worked in sales, business development, channel management, and market analytics. His expertise in strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and data-driven decision-making strengthens the Foundation's efforts towards sustainable community development and social impact.

Mr Amoghavarsha Rameshwar – Trustee

Amoghavarsha Rameshwar

Trustee

Amoghavarsha is a Trustee of BCSF. He holds a B.A., LL.B. degree from the School of Law, Manasagangothri, University of Mysore, and completed his postgraduate studies in Law from the Department of Studies in Law, Manasagangothri, University of Mysore.

An advocate by profession, he is actively practicing law in the courts of Mysuru. Through his legal expertise and commitment to social service, he supports the Foundation in promoting good governance and ethical practices.

Advisory Committee Members

Dr Arima Mishra

Arima Mishra serves as an Advisory Committee Member of BCSF. She is the Director of the School of Development, Azim Premji University. She has over two decades of experience in research, teaching, and public health. She has previously served at the University of Delhi, IC-HEALTH, Delhi (a WHO and Global Forum for Health Research initiative), and the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru.

A trained sociologist from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, Dr. Mishra's research lies at the intersection of public health and social sciences, with expertise in health systems, social determinants of health, health equity, urban and tribal health, maternal and child health, chronic diseases, community health workers, and public health policy. She has also been an academic visitor to leading international universities in the USA, United Kingdom, and Norway, and is the recipient of several prestigious national and international awards for her contributions to public health research.

Dr Madhav Ram Balakrishna

Dr Vishal Rao

Dr. (Prof.) U. S. Vishal Rao, MS, FRCS (Glasgow), FACS (USA), Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, serves as an Advisory Committee Member of BCSF. He is the Country Director – Head & Neck Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgery and Dean, Centre of Academic Research at HealthCare Global (HCG) Cancer Centre, Bengaluru. An internationally renowned surgical oncologist, researcher, innovator, and TEDx speaker, Dr. Rao is widely recognized for inventing the Aum Voice Prosthesis, an affordable speaking device for throat cancer patients that has received global recognition from BBC, Harvard Business Review, and Forbes.

With over 100 national and international scientific publications and more than 18 patents in medical innovations, Dr. Rao has made significant contributions to cancer care, tobacco control, and healthcare innovation. He serves on several national and state advisory bodies, including the Principal Scientific Advisor's Consultative Group, Government of India, the Vision Group for Biotechnology, Government of Karnataka, and the High-Powered Committee on Tobacco Control and Cancer Control. He also advises international tobacco control initiatives in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and has received numerous prestigious recognitions, including the Honorary FRCS (Glasgow), the Judy Wilkenfeld Award for Global Excellence in Tobacco Control, and the Kempegowda Award.

Maya Elias

Honorary Faculty – Public Health

She is providing technical guidance to the Foundation's Healthy Ageing initiative. She is a PhD Scholar at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, and a professional social worker with over 15 years of experience in mental health and public health research. She previously worked at the Institute of Public Health (IPH), Bengaluru, where she contributed to research on health systems, access to medicines, and social exclusion. Her areas of expertise include healthy ageing, health policy and systems research, tobacco control, access to medicines, and mental health.

Dr Murlikrishna

Consultant & Advisor, Public Health Initatives

Dr Murali Krishna is UK trained psychiatrist with expertise in conducting mental health studies in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). He investigates life-course determinants of brain health across birth cohorts and several population-based life-course epidemiology studies in urban and rural areas in India. His lab was the first in a LMIC setting to examine early life determinants of healthy aging and extend the DOHaD (Developmental Origins of Health and Disease) science to dementias in late life. His transdisciplinary collaborations have resulted in cohorts enriched with genetic, molecular and environmental data. These cohorts as constituent studies of several global consortia contribute to ‘big data’ providing unique opportunities for transcultural and global comparisons of healthy aging. He supports a wide range of NGOs and community organizations that provide clinical care for older adults with dementia. He was awarded the Global Brain Health Fellowship from the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI), Dublin.

Narasimha Murthy S

Consultant

He oversees the Foundation's old age home work. He holds a postgraduate degree in Social Work and brings over 13 years of experience in healthcare and community development. His professional experience includes serving as a Health Camp Coordinator at Agarwal Eye Hospital and as a Medical Social Worker at HCG Hospital, where he specialized in patient counseling and follow-up care. He has also worked extensively with non-governmental organizations, coordinating health camps and community outreach programs for underserved populations, including street children and residents of urban slums.

As part of the InGeHMs Project, she supports community-based data collection, conducts health awareness activities, and facilitates group sessions to promote healthy behaviours and improve community engagement in health initiatives.
